On the 170th anniversary of the birth of José Martí, the most universal of Cubans and, despite any differences of opinion among people, a figure who should be remembered by all Cubans who, in one way or another, present or absent, love their land blessed by the existence of men like him. A fundamental book for understanding his multifaceted figure came into my hands. This book was conceived to humbly approach the human being who, even after his physical passing, possessed a thought powerful enough to influence generations who, to this day, keep his ideals alive. No matter the perspective from which one views him, the challenge will always be to accurately measure the magnitude of this Cuban intellectual, just as we must be able to understand and define other Latin American heroes such as Bolívar, Sucre, San Martín, and others who may come to mind.
