On 14th Dec 2024. I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Gulu in Northern Uganda for a skateboarding trip that I’ll never forget. The event, organized by Skate&Beyond in collaboration with the Gulu Skateboarding Community,
brings together skaters from all over to celebrate the growing scene in the region. The Kampala Skateboard Initiative (KSI) team attends as judges, adding our expertise to the event.

The journey to Gulu is an adventure in itself. We travel for about 11 hours by bus,

passing through the stunning Murchison Falls National Game Park. Along the way, we are treated to breathtaking views of Uganda’s wildlife, with sightings of beautiful animals like giraffes, elephants, and buffaloes—an unforgettable experience for any nature lover.
Upon arriving in Gulu, we make our way to the newly constructed skate park, where the event is held. This park not only serves as the center for the day’s competition but also symbolizes the future of skateboarding in Gulu. The event gives us a chance to preview its potential for future expansion, and the excitement among the local skateboarding community is palpable.
The competition itself is filled with energy, and it’s inspiring to see so many talented skaters pushing their limits. At the end of the event, there is a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, and everyone gets a piece to celebrate the day. The atmosphere is warm, filled with a sense of community and shared love for the sport.

One of the highlights is when Mr. Davin takes the stage to talk about Gnars and the importance of onboarding the next generation of shredders.

His words about nurturing talent and ensuring the growth of the skateboarding culture are a great way to close out the event. It’s a reminder that this skateboarding community is just beginning to thrive, and there’s so much more to come.
This trip to Gulu isn’t just about skating—it’s about witnessing the growth of skate culture in Uganda,
