Flora and Fauna. What an interesting concept to explore when speaking of the deep. With over 90% of the planet's ocean remaining unexplored, one can imagine what actually lives there. We know that the floor bed is not flat. Think of it in terms of topside mountains and valleys. The same is believed to exist in the deep sea due to the shift in tectonic plates. 1 But why does so much of the ocean remains unexplored? The answer lies in the fact that One of the biggest challenges of ocean exploration can be explained through physics. Dr. Gene Carl Feldman, an oceanographer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, states that the ocean, at great depths, is characterized by zero visibility, extremely cold temperatures, and crushing amounts of pressure. He goes on to say that “in some ways, it’s a lot easier to send people into space than it is to send people to the bottom of the ocean. The intense pressures in the deep ocean make it an extremely difficult environment to explore.” Oceana also e
