I was wondering how I was going to compose a piece about the new Finnish study into the outcomes for medical and/or surgical treatments for gender dysphoria and was at a loss about how to start. The original report, which I’ve linked to below, contains some stonking good and hard hitting parts to it but it’s also dense with facts and figures and statistics that need to be examined by the individual reader and not have me paraphrasing them. However what we can draw from this study is that gender transition in teenagers and young people might not be the cure for whatever mental condition avails them and in some cases might make the person’s mental distress worse. The study certainly shows that there is no drop in contact from gender reassignment patients with psychiatric professionals for matters other than gender identity issues, in other words patients are still presenting to mental health workers with mental distress despite the gender medical treatment.
