The Aktau Mountains are situateted in a remote region of the Altyn-Emel National Park in southeast Kazakhstan. After what felt like an endless, bumpy ride with deep washboard ruts over 75 dusty kilometers through the steppe, they suddenly appear: the Aktau Mountains. Incredibly beautiful, layer by layer in white, red, ochre, and grey. We left the mopeds behind and hiked a few kilometers into the mountains — and even spotted a secret toadhead agama and a snake!
