Hello everyone on this lovely morning. Things are slowly getting into full swing, and the next stage of the chickens’ cosy haven is gradually taking shape. As I’m using whatever materials I have to hand, I’ve started building the nesting boxes. For this, I used some wooden slats I had left over. As a DIY enthusiast, you’ve got plenty of screws and nails anyway. A base that’s easy to keep clean was also essential – a piece of roofing membrane was perfect for this. It’s wipeable, waterproof and made of plastic, but is also lined with straw or wood shavings to make it cosy for the chickens. All in all, the project only cost me time, and I’m very happy with the result. I just need to attach a panel at the bottom to stop the hens from kicking the straw out, so they feel a bit more sheltered and the eggs actually stay in the box.
